Less than shockingly, ABC has approved a pilot of exactly the show we thought they would, although for some reason they went with the guy who directed the billion-dollar-grossing movie than our preferred horse in this race.
Joss Whedon will be co-writing it with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen and also possibly directing. And it’s going to happen fast, too: Writing is starting immediately and it’s likely a pilot will be ready as a midseason replacement in 2013 at the absolute latest.
I’m of two minds about this. I’m not sure how Whedon’s TV shtick will hold up. Yes, Buffy was great. It also went off the air nearly a decade ago.
Let’s all take a minute to feel old.
Anyway, Whedon has shown himself to be a capable film director and writer; The Avengers was the best thing he’d turned out since the Buffy episode The Body and has pretty much set the guy, at least for a while, as a major Hollywood director.
But will his sensibilities translate to something that’s basically going to be a cop show? And how much leeway will he have? We’ll find out soon enough.

Back date the series Pre-Avengers 1 and bring back Coulson as the Boss figure /liason with an off screen Nick Fury. One hour shows can supply background to future movies… Introduction to AIM (if this isnt done in Ironman 3) and the reemergence of Hydra. Henry Prym can be introduced as thier Science guy. There are ways to make this work.
Dollhouse and Firefly were also amazing.
Firefly is great, but I find my favorite episodes didn’t have Whedon as the main writer. Serenity is a movie I love as a fan but as a critic find a bit too generic.
When it was on, Dollhouse was amazing. I own it all on DVD, and have re-watched it a couple of times with immense enjoyment.
But every so often people ask me “should I watch it?”, and I find I can’t in good conscience recommend that they do. You have to sit through five or six episodes of setup before it gets good.
SHIELD without Nick Fury doesn’t have the same weight, but it would be great if they could get a couple Samuel L Jackson appearances – OR even cooler, would be if they had classic Nick Fury on this show and just chalk it up to Samuel L having to go undercover.
Could be an interesting show, and a great way to showcase some heroes and villains that wouldn’t work in tent pole movies.
Classic Nick Fury? You mean Hasselhoff?
I AM SO EXCITE CAN’T MAKE RIGHT ENGLISH
I think what we saw with Avengers was that Whedon has this ability to really make characters work when he isn’t trying to explain the mythology of the world he has imagined. Working within Marvel, the show has a chance to work in that it doesn’t have to explain some of the more basic stuff and can get more to the inner workings of shield and how annoying it is when the villains in your crime procedural are blowing up banks with their minds.
And man did I use the word “work” like 12 times there. Oof.
I wonder if it will have a strong female lead.
Only if she’s improbably young and deceptively strong for her diminutive appearance .
Cant wait to see Summer Glau in this!!!!!
