Remember when the internet fittingly lambasted the ridiculous Catwoman zero cover? Then the artist, Guillem March, even poked fun at his work with an R. Crumb style parody? DC Comics took the hint and replaced the cover with a less anatomically-challenged version of Catwoman (also drawn by Guillem March). The new, superior version is on the right in the picture above, in case the whole not-being-a-piece-of-crap part didn’t make it clear.
A reader tipped me that the cover to the issue had been changed. And indeed it has and the changes are noticeable:
- She’s zipped up
- Her butt is in proportion to the rest of her body
- You can now see both her legs
- And her face has been changed [DCWKA]
Also, she appears to now have a torso that isn’t 100% boobs and her body weight is no longer 40% butt and 30% thighs (and 0% calves). So that’s progress.

I think I may have to make a t-shirt that says “I find appropriately proportioned women in leather catsuits attractive.”
It’s still a stupid cover but it’s now at least slightly more anatomically correct.
I can’t be the first to wonder why they don’t release two versions of the same issue.
1. For kids. Less revealing costumes, sexual content/situations. Less violence/blood/graphic. No profane language.
2. For adults. Unedited.
Collectors may be compelled to purchase both versions of issues. And when kids become old enough they may be interested in purchasing the unedited versions of edited issues they already have to see what they haven’t seen yet.
I’m don’t read or collect comics myself, but wouldn’t this be a win for all parties involved?
No, we can barely get people to buy the comics that are out there splitting them isn’t really a solution. That’s going to take a whole lot more man power and overhead that’ll take a huge chunk out of the already razor thin profits.
Do non-artists not understand foreshortening? Aside from preferences for or against sexual imagery there is not much wrong with the original cover. Ironically the new cover is far worse, she went from a little arch to her back but a very aggressive foreshortened angle, to a totally broken spine. In the new picture her back bends at almost a 90 degree angle about half way up her ribs. How is this not way worse?
I understand that she could have had her shirt zipped up all the way and less vacuum sealing on her butt, but to say the anatomy is better in the new cover is a joke.
The composition is overall far more boring in the new cover as well. It went from a very dynamic if overly sexual to completely boring and silly looking.
I’m not an artist, and I understand foreshortening. But only ‘cuz I used to date a painter.
Point is, I’m glad someone finally had the guts to come out and say this; it’s what I’ve been thinking ever since the controversy first kicked up.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to believe an acrobat might have very muscular thighs and glutes. I don’t think it’s hard to imagine a posture and point of view which combine to prevent me seeing someone’s calves (not that anyone needs to see her calves).
I don’t think you can take yourself seriously arguing about how oversexualized Catwoman is when she’s fucking CATWOMAN! She runs around in skin-tight black leather! Isn’t this the same issue that ends w/ her more-or-less raping Bruce Wayne on the roof of a skyscraper?
EVERYONE knows that cats have very flexible spines.
Thank you! I’ve been an artist for most of my life and perspective is an odd thing to learn at first. Things seem off when really they’re supposed to look that way.
The original cover might be questionable because the size of her boobs and butt are fairly large, but maybe they wanted her a bit more zaftig this time. That doesn’t really make sense with her being so athletic, but it is a comic book.
The new style is unique for the character, whereas the second version looks like it was copied from the new Batman game.
Uh yeah, guys? I’m not an artist in the professional sense, but I do know foreshortening, and the whole problem is…
… that’s not what foreshortened limbs look like. Period. Her left thigh is literally bent like a damn boomerang. Her bicep is longer than her forearm, and no one’s spine twists that way on purpose.
The new design ain’t much better… but at least there was some effort.
The thigh isn’t foreshortened. The arm is. Looks like you DON’T know foreshortening, after all.
Everyone is this thread is getting melvin’d.
It’s just a freakin comic book cover. If this is what concerns you in all of your life concerns then you must have a really great life. Because my first impression is: “Who really cares?”
