I’ve been rewatching the latest set of episodes from Futurama recently, and they’re not bad. They’re funny, if occasionally somewhat simultaneously preachy and dumb in the way only Futurama can be. Whenever the series gets political, it tends to teeter on the verge of becoming strident, yet oddly taking no sides. It’s like watching a political loon have an argument with himself on Reddit.
That tended to happen a lot this season, or at least it felt like it, and I think I finally put my finger on why.
At least once a season, there’s an episode that’s, at root, a great science fiction story. Last season it was The Late Phillip J. Fry, which was like all great time travel stories as much about regret and second chances as about the science. At its best, the series turns out episodes like Godfellas, Mobius Dick, Roswell That Ends Well, or Jurassic Bark, stories that develop the characters while turning SF cliches on their head and being hilarious into the bargain.
This season, we didn’t have that episode. There wasn’t any unequivocally bad episodes, although The Bots and The Bees once again illustrates that gender politics are the show’s Achilles heel. There just wasn’t anything that, well, honestly showed any interest in science fiction, really. Instead it was mostly about the social satire, and the only episode where that really worked was Decision 3012, although the ending may be a bit too cheap and cynical for some.
The closest it really got was Free Will Hunting, about Bender’s desire to break free of his programming. The show can actually deal with serious philosophical and scientific issues in a funny way, and this would seem to be right up their alley, but they rush through anything that might give the episode some depth. And, worse, they dump the ending gag, for some reason, and switch it with something that’s funny but not quite as engaging as what they obviously wanted to end on. After all, the entire point of the episode is that even in the absence of free will, our actions have weight and consequences we’re responsible for. I’m not pulling that out of my ass: One member of the robot council actually says that to Bender’s face. It’s the entire theme of the episode, and they chuck it out the window.
Again, none of the episodes were bad, although some teetered on the preachy, and the show is still good. I’m just hopeful we’ll see at least a little more science fiction when the show returns next year.

The episode where they break into the Near Death Star to visit Doctor Farnsworth’s parents was a valid attempt at a heartfelt sci-fi story IMO. Was it at the level of Jurrassic Bark? No, but what is? Jumping the shark usually means the show loses its heart and I honestly think Futurama has not done so yet.
Fair point, although it just didn’t really do it for me. I felt the Near-Death Star gag had pretty much already been squeezed out since they introduced it.
But they lampooned The Matrix and isn’t it about time?
you know what I think about this “Bender is great! Bender is great! Doodly Doodly ………..Bender
I think the one thing we’re all forgetting is tha…
All hail the hypno-toad
All hail the hypno-toad
Since the show came back, I have needed to rewatch a LOT of the episodes to REALLY like them (aside from the occasional standout). I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Futurama, but there’s less instant classic-ness to it now.
I thought the nature anthology was GREAT, though.
Yes. Way too many uses of stock background characters. Enough Scruffy and New York Guy and Crazy Lady.
Stop it!
I don’t think they’re as good as they had been upon return from “hiatus”, but at the same time they’re still better than most other stuff.
new futurama has none of the sincerity of the previous series. it is a shadow that tries to be funny, gets it right sometimes, but never feels right.
The Six Million Dollar Mon was truly terrible. Just unfunny and you wonder how it got past the pitch stage. The previous episode, however, (The Butterjunk Effect) will go down as this season’s classic episode.
It seemed like the bad and mediocre episodes this season were mostly lacking in the writing and the timing of jokes. They were missing some polish. I hope they find it again soon.
What gets me is the amount of fan-serves they put in since being on Comedy Central. In Every episode there is some kind of bobs on display moment and it just cheapens the whole show. Anyone who was into cartoon porn would go find better than there offering so just leave it out.
This was always just the Simpsons’ idiot retard cousin and appealed to those that find Family Guy too high-brow. If you area Futurama fan it just means you like shit.
Pugiron doesn’t like the font.
I loved the original run so so much, I still have the DVDs, but there’s something about the DVD movies and the new TV run that just irks me. In exactly the same way that new Simpsons irks me. I gave up on it after the 2010 run of episodes, but it still bums me out.
I liked the 2012 season. Probably the best of the new run. Still not up to the standard of the old run, but I wouldn’t simpson-ify it just yet.
what some of you guys don’t realize is when futurama was on originally people weren’t going “oh there’s another classic episode”… and they weren’t dissecting every episode as well rating it and figuring out if they jumped the shark or if it matched the previous season… they just loved the show and a great episode stood out… but it was not until years of reruns for most people that the eps caught on… episodes you consider classic were just good 10 years ago… so you are comparing watching a new one and your experience doing that with seeing a classic one over 10 years numerous times… i guarantee you ten years from now people will not know the difference…
You’re 100% wrong. I was a huge fan of the show in its original run and people were extremely excited about it. You can probably find the forums from back then if you google hard enough. Saying classic episodes were “just good” 10 years ago is like saying fans of Community don’t go nuts about episodes now because the show is still in its original run. What a ridiculous statement.
I have no problem with people loving the new seasons, or even thinking that they’re better than the old ones. Good for them. I wish I was in that boat. But you’re nuts if you can’t tell the difference. It’s huge.
lester… everyone has different opinions… that’s all cool and i love all futurama fans but ironically i think you’re 100 percent wrong too lol… i really believe a lot of people like you today (not necessarily you) are so negative and enjoy being miserable and enjoy complaining about tv or art or entertainment that they get more fun out of that than actually liking a show… i’ve talked to so many people who had no idea futurama was even back on the air… i describe to them the episodes and they realize they’ve seen them and loved them but though they were a part of the original run becasue they’ve seen them as part of the reruns… it’s already happening… reminds me of star trek tos fans… when tng premiered a lot of the die hard fans of the original whined so much… they just couldn’t accept it… even all these years later some still hang on to that dislike…
If you’re trying to tell me the Star Wars prequels will be awesome in another 10 years, you’re nuts. I’m with Lester.
I mean, I’m not *with* Lester. I like chicks. But I agree with Lester, in a non-sexual way.
