So, Fox holds the movie rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four — it’s only two properties, but they’re big ones. You could argue the X-Men are worth as much as the rest of the Marvel Universe combined. They recently hired Mark Millar to oversee their Marvel properties. According to our own Dan Seitz this is a good thing.
Well, Millar has already made his first really good decision. Rather than trying to set up a separate little fiefdom based only on the X-Men and Fantastic Four (like Sony is trying to do with its handful of properties) Millar says he’d like Fox’s movies to share the same universe as the movies made by Marvel Studios. He had this to say…
“Fox have said that they want to build a cohesive universe and I’d personally like this to work in complement to the Marvel one. It would be cool if these universes didn’t contradict each other [,,,] I’d love to make it look like they’re all just happening in one place.”
Add to this the fact that X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner would “love” to do Avengers vs. X-Men and it seems likely Fox and Marvel Studios may be planning to get pretty chummy. Meanwhile Sony sits alone in the cafeteria sketching Venom/Ghost Rider crossover ideas in their notebook.

How is this any indication that they’ll work together? Two people at FOX want a bite of Marvel’s money? Shocking. And how open to collaboration is Marvel going to be when FOX just rejected their Daredevil/FF swap?
And optimistic speculation from Mark Millar? Unheard of.
Basically it sounds like Donner’s job is at stake so they’re desperate, realizing how much money they’ve been missing out on by not taking these characters seriously. People still remember the crap fest that was Wolverine Origins so it’s not likely that it’s sequel will do a whole lot better in the box office. And with The Hobbit 3 jacking First Class 2′s release date It’s not looking good for them. So Marvel should just sit back and watch how things turn out then deal. Remember Fox has to pay Marvel/Disney a small portion of their box office returns no matter what. So let them beg. FOX shouldn’t have dug this whole in the first place.
Yeah I’d love for this to happen, but Marvel/Disney don’t really NEED the X-Men or Fantastic Four to make a movie that earns a billion dollars. The creative minds may find an even footing, but when the studio execs look at how much of the earnings they’d have to give the other studio to use certain characters, they’re sure to go, “wait, why do we need to do this? Avengers made over a billion without the the guy with blades in his knuckles, right? PASS”
Sony probably still shops at Hot Topic too.
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS MOVIE STUDIO’S PAIN!!
he’s smart.
Although Fox (in my eyes) hit X-Men: First Class out of the park, but everything else they’ve done with the Marvel properties has been “meh.”
however, Marvel has been obviously been very smart with their flicks. I feel like both studios would benefit from combining forces… not to mention a nerdling’s wet dream.
Marvel better not indulge in this crap! X-men should be doing Avengers numbers but FOX doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing. So why should Marvel/Disney prolong the possibility of getting back the rights of what should be theirs? Here’s a thought…If First Class had done 1.5billion last year and Avengers flopped would Donner and Millar be having this same discussion??? Tell FOX to sign over Fantastic four and then you’ll talk…otherwise keep your backwards X-men continuity where it is!
Good points made by all. Fox couldn’t normally find their own ass with two hands, a dog, and a flashlight but First Class was very well executed. That being said X-Men should absolutely be doing Avengers numbers but probably never will until it goes back to Marvel. As a fan I’m glad to see Millar making moves to incorporate them because as a fan this is good. BUT. I dont really see the benefit for Disney/Marvel. Like how is this going to increase the draw of a franchise that already crushed it at the box office. Fox needs them, not the other way around.
Fox will dangle Wolverine, and Marvel will bite.
Exactly. Yeah, X-Men should be making more money than it is, but Fox isn’t going to let the rights revert to Marvel anytime soon, so teaming up is the only way Marvel Studios are going to be able to get their hands on Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men. Fox is not without bargaining chips.
So wait a second. You’re telling me somebody actually wants to mix things that would mix well together and bring a sense of cohesion amongst great ideas? AND they see it as both profitable and endearing to fans? Sounds insane, like mixing, oh I don’t know, chocolate and peanut butter to…geth…er… HOLY HELL I HAVE A GREAT CANDY IDEA.
I bet if we all pretend that Clark Gregg died, they’d be guilted into teaming up.
