Resident Evil 6 sold 4.5 million copies its week of release, a company record. It was projected to sell seven million.
Then Capcom revised the projection slightly, stating that by March it’d sell six million.
Now… uh… well…
Let’s just let CVG explain the situation:
The publisher has lowered its sales estimate by 11 per cent to 93.5 billion yen ($1.1 billion) and net profit forecast by 33.7 per cent to 6.5 billion yen ($77.1 million).
“Sales of the major new title Resident Evil 6 were initially strong but subsequently weakened,” the firm said today. “As a result, sales for this title are certain to fall short of the plan.”
The good news is that Capcom is still making money, so it won’t be going entirely mobile just yet. Also, a delay of Monster Hunter 4, a game nobody outside of Japan cares about and everybody inside Japan will murder you to get an early copy of, dinged their financials.
Still, that means Resident Evil 6 basically came out and stalled. Perhaps this is not a surprise: It hit October 2nd, right before, let’s see here, Dishonored, Assassin’s Creed III, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Halo 4, Hitman: Absolution, Far Cry 3, and the Wii U. But it may also have something to do with the terrible reviews it got, which we found a bit hyperbolic.
Either way, hopefully Capcom delivers a better game for the seventh entry in the series… already rumored to be in development.

Dear Capcom,
Stop trying to re-invent Resident Evil with new play styles, co-op modes, controls, etcetra. You perfected the game with Resident Evil 4. GO BACK TO THAT FORMULA! (minus the Ashley escort missions)
So, basically just the opening Garados levels?
I’m not going to lie, I liked having Ashley around. She ducks! Quickly! Very useful.
I guess people listen to Metacritic after all. Still, I know I’m in the minority, but I actually liked Resident Evil 5. I thought it would have been a good way to tie up the series for a reboot if they wanted to do that. This game just felt unneeded.
I don’t know if you can blame Metacritic, the issue seems deeper. I think with the poor economy, less kids/young adults have money to pay premium dollars to NEW games and adults (hard core gamers) have less time to play and therefore are behind on the new game curve.
I fall into the later category, and I’m about 6 months to a year behind on games I want to play. For example I just picked up Skyward Sword this week for 20 bucks. I only buy new games for 2 reasons, first if there is an extensive multiplayer facet (Black Ops 2) or its a sequel that I waited 3 years for, and can’t wait any longer (Mass Effect 3).
I’ll play Resident Evil 6 sometime in 2013 when I pick it up from Amazon/Ebay/GameStop for 24.99 or less.
I actually liked RE6 quite a bit as far as mindless shoot ‘em ups go, but it definitely didn’t live up to the last 2 games.
Yeah, I enjoyed it when I played it, but it was just so damn shallow next to the other games coming out I never came back to it once my review was done.
i sold my copy in disgust. by the time i got to the end of ada’s thing i’d simply had enough.. capcom, you really shit the bed with this one. as a result i certainly will not be pre-ordering re7 should it ever exist.
Dear Capcom,
This is what you get for screwing over Mega Man and screwing up Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
Sincerely,
The Fans.
Although Street Fighter X Mega Man is pretty damn sweet, you have to admit.
Yeah, but it’s still a fan project. It’s like Capcom waited for the last minute to study and paid the smart kid to write the paper for him.
I am just glad Capcom saw this and decided to officially release it for free instead of sending lawyers to curb-stomp it onto the torrents.
True that.
Well, the “everything for everyone” approach has failed. Next Resident Evil should have two modes. Single player and a co-op campaign. Each should be, like, 10 hours long max. Polish the s–t out of them. Or hey, just take Resident Evil: Revelations, spiff up the graphics and slap a “7″ on it — nobody except me and the 5 other people who bought it on the 3DS will notice.
I don’t mind a long campaign, I just want more gameplay variety.
I have nothing against a long campaign, but I’d like to see them revisit the “7 – 10 hour campaign with multiple endings and characters” approach of earlier games. I think horror works better when it keeps things brief. Horror movies are best when they’re 90 minutes and under, and I think the most effective horror games I’ve played kept things at around the 10-hour mark.
I’m waiting for Monster Hunter 4
………..
It was such a horrendous move for Capcom to release such a poor version. A huge letdown for fans of RE series. My best one in the series remain RE4 followed by RE 5.
yep, they had it nailed down then.
