Francesco Francavilla is officially the whole package with Black Beetle: No Way Out. He’s had a long, and notable, career as an artist, but here, we get to see what he’s like as a writer, as well. And he does beautifully on both counts.
The writing stands out not least because Francavilla manages to simultaneously evoke the pulp heroes and the superheroes that were based on them without coming off as cheesy. Francavilla’s writing, and artwork, may be in love with a certain age, but he avoids cliches in both. The dialogue is well-paced and feels of the time without feeling forced, and the book itself is quickly paced. There’s a story here, and it’s a pretty zippy one; somebody is bumping off gangsters before the Black Beetle can put them behind bars, and it’s not sitting well with him.
And then there’s the art. Francavilla does more with layouts here that we see in most books on the stands, even well rendered ones. Here’s one splash page, for example:

Is he showing off? Abso-freakin’-lutely. But who cares? Every page of this book is that gorgeous, that thought out, that lovingly rendered.
And Francavilla plays right to his strengths: We’ve got a prison on a cliff, Golden Age back alleys filled with shadow, and period details, lovingly rendered. Francavilla keeps his color palette limited, a choice that really sets the atmosphere, and he gives himself enough room to show off without either turning the book into an art tour or cramping pages with dialogue. This is a book written by somebody who is in love with Will Eisner’s work and has the feel of something that can match up to him.
Sure, there are deeper books on the stands, but this is a solid slice of pulp as a story, and art-wise one of the best books on the stands. It’s well, well worth picking up.

Only thing I’ve read this week is New Avengerrs #2. Something I did not know about the so-called “Illuminati” that apparently was already known is that they each have one of the Infinity Gems. Seems to me, if I have an Infinity Gem and I’m coming up against horrible opponents every day, I’m using that puppy, not holding onto it as a trump card for the universe-ending events.
Aside from that, I like this. They couldn’t have made the stakes any higher that I can think of.
I’m guessing Thanos is involved in all this somehow. Isn’t he always when it comes to the cosmic stuff?
Pretty much. The bro wants his bling back. I did like the issue, I thought it was stronger than the first one, but I’m kind of wondering where the series goes once this arc wraps up. Also I’ve got to wonder why they don’t seriously think not having the Mind Gem isn’t going to bite them on the ass.
Yes! My thinking (before they threw out the idea of someone engineering this chaos) was that when they found the mind gem, Thanos would be the one with it and they’d be forced to work with him. I enjoy a good deal-with-the-devil storyline (underscore: good).
And yes, it’s a definite uptick from the first one. Sometimes in an attempt to be mysterious, things instead just come across vague.
Thanos, Darkseid, whatever…
My LCS was sold out of this book! I guess I could go to a different shop, but they have a $20 minimum purchase for debit cards. My week is RUINED!
Buy it from Dark Horse’s site; they’ve got a great app and the website is solid.
I’m reading and loving All New X-Men, but I’m wondering where you guys think the future of the comic will go. The Original 5 are here, they’re chillin’, they’ve all got teenage angst going on, and… now what?
My gut says things go terribly, terribly wrong, at speed. Like “timeline collapse” wrong.
This comic looks so awesome I’m…going to wait another six months for it to come out in what will surely be a gorgeous hardcover.
Then again, I’ve been buying every single issue of Before Watchmen for no apparent reason, so clearly I have no credibility.
I would drop the four bucks. It’s a beautiful book.
I didn’t think I’d like it, and to me the writing wasn’t what I was super into. But my god, the book is gorgeous. It’s worth the buy just for the art.
I’ve been loving Captain Marvel as well. This weeks was both heartwarming and heartwrenching, Kelly Sue DeConnick is slaying everything she’s writing wright now (Ghost, Avengers Assemble to name a few that I’m reading). I’m also super pumped for “Pretty Deadly” along those lines.
