Nintendo has done something truly impressive with the Pokemon series — it’s managed to take something that started as a fad and draw out its success for over 15-years. The makers of Pogs, Yu-Gi-Oh and Furby wish their creations had even a fraction of the longevity of Pokemon. How has Nintendo done it? By not messing with a sound formula. Each new generation of Pokemon games only make slight tweaks to the game engine, and the most marginal improvement to graphics possible.
Well, that appears to be changing with the newly announced Pokemon X and Y. For one, the games are going fully 3D for the first time. There’s also going to be improved online play, and possibly even changes to the tried and true ways of catching and battling Pokemon. So, get yourself in a 12-year-old state of mind, then hit the jump for the first footage of Pokemon X/Y…
Pokemon X/Y will be launching worldwide October 2013. That’s right, no waiting a year for an English localization, as is usually the case with Pokemon games. Nintendo may say phones and tablets don’t intimidate them, but they’re certainly pulling out all the stops with this latest Pokemon generation.
Just one last question — will these games have Squirtle in them? No Squirtle, no 40-bucks from me Nintendo.

I am a huge Pokemon fan. Serebii.net is a website I always check on a daily (sometimes tri-daily) basis. I know almost every monster’s name, type and move set. While the graphics are getting a HUGE over haul, a much needed one at that, I don’t believe the core game play will change much. We’ll still have 4 moves, JRPG game play. 8 gyms, 1 or 2 evil teams and a pokemon with enough power to destroy the continent if it becomes grumpy enough to do so. Which, personally, I’m fine with.
As for the iOS fear, there were some serious rumors going around that the next generation (these) might be on iPhone. Nintendo owns 33% of Game Freak, but apparently GF is free to put their games on any platform they want. The 3D pokedex for example is on iOS.
I’m pumped for this though. As for Squirtle, he might not be in the game, but I have a feeling a remake of Red and Blue in 3D might not be too far away after these.
Nintendo co-owns the Pokemon copyright with Gamefreak, so no major Pokemon games will hit phones/tablets without their say so — just supplemental stuff like the Pokedex.
This might actually be enough to get me to buy a 3DS
Yeah, I’m going to have to weigh this against my utter 3DS apathy.
I got the 3DS for Christmas to feed my Professor Layton addiction. This game may make me finally play Pokemon… I know a lot of people who have waited a lot of years for me to say that. Sigh. Should I wait until October or is there another game I should start with?
My brother and I went halfsies on a DS just to play pokemon. Looks like the same thing may happen with the 3DS,maybe. I hate that all the new Pokemon are garbage designs compared to the first 251
Second the Squirtle comment
They should have just confirmed “Pokemon Z” to come out six months later.
Come on, they don’t even need to confirm it.
Ugh Pikachu, if there was ever a case for hunting an animal till extinction….
