EA And Maxis Say ‘SimCity’ Would Need Significant Reengineering To Be Played Offline. They’re Lying.

The launch of the new SimCity has been, to put it mildly, a colossal bunglef–k. The problem lies with the game’s always-online requirement — fans are demanding it be dropped, but EA and Maxis insist it’s not that easy. According to SimCity’s developers the online requirement is about more than DRM. According to them, SimCity relies on cloud computing to run it’s simulation, and thus flipping off the Internet switch simply isn’t an option…
“With the way that the game works, we offload a significant amount of the calculations to our servers so that the computations are off the local PCs and are moved into the cloud. It wouldn’t be possible to make the game offline without a significant amount of engineering work by our team.”
Riiiight. Couple problems with that…
First several people, including Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo and the creator of Minecraft, Notch, have tried disconnecting their Internet while playing the game. Shock of shocks, the simulation doesn’t go into immediate meltdown. In fact, the game remains perfectly playable for up to 20-minutes before it catches on and boots you back to the main menu. Other users have reported being able to play the game for hours offline through the use of certain tricks.
Also, take this with a grain of salt, but an “anonymous Maxis employee” has come forward to confirm EA’s servers aren’t handling any vital game processes, and that an offline version would not require significant retooling.
So yeah, they’ve finally killed me. If the launch of SimCity were merely botched, I could have forgiven and probably would have jumped aboard once the game was more stable, but evidence is mounting that EA and Maxis are being outright dishonest. It’s a shame, because the game really does look fun, but at this point I’d feel dirty if I supported this s–t.

“I’m completely shocked about this.”
-No one, ever.
(My recommendation for a strategy fix: Endless Space is half off over at Steam right now.)
I just booted up my Sim City rom for the SNES!
And I’ve made a mistake.
I heard Endless Space is pretty fantastic thanks for the tip.
I’m gonna keep an eye out for Civitas, or any other SimCity rip off. The real shame is this wont teach anyone any lessons.
I have a GIANT SAD. They made the game we actually wanted, and then ruined it in the name of DRM and reduced server load, and then still didn’t have adequate server resources for launch.
It took a force of will to use as few caps as I did in this comment. I am so mad, not just because I won’t be buying a toy I really want, but because for weeks now I’ve been playing contrarian to Dan Seitz and The Surly Badger, and now you’ve made me look like SUCH A TOOL, EA. I hope you all get anal fissures for this.
::brohug::
And yet millions of morons still threw money at these assholes knowing full well the game launch wasn’t going to go well.
I work in software development on the testing/support side of things. This sounds like par-for-the-course bullshittery to me.
Viva Steam!
I spent way too much time earlier today also having the pangs of, “Want so much once the bugs are gone, but must vote with dollars.” This is like living next door to a pedophile that throws sick barbecues.
Best analogy ever. You, sir, are a poet.
Nailed it.

tater tots fried to a nice golden brown on the side, thanks.
It really is just sad at this point. Why does EA think they can just lie about this stuff like it’s the 80′s and we’re all still a bunch of kids that don’t know any better. Of course someone was going look at the code. Of course their bullshit was going to get double-checked and called.
“A design choice from inception” eh? Then why is always-online so completely unnecessary you bastards?
Shame on you Lucy, and shame on you EA.
And if one wants to really wants to get riled up, look at all this in context with the fact that while the big corporate publishers are pushing this always-on shit, companies like Time Warner refuse to compete and drag their feet at giving us better, cheaper internet and the consumers are stuck in the middle like some kind of bukkake video.
My daily struggle of wanting to play this versus refusing to support EA/Maxis for this is literally tearing me apart. It’s not fair.
Amazon now selling the game for $40.00. Ha ha. No way man. Even at a discount, sounds like a terrible place to put money.
