After a somewhat slow January and a relatively busy February, March is coming to kick the ass of every gamer in town. It doesn’t matter what you like, there’s probably a game you want to play. Here are the five most likely to be eating your time.
Tomb Raider
It’s not only been at the receiving end of an enormous hype machine and is the gritty reboot of a beloved, if somewhat goofy, franchise, every early review of the game has pretty much said it’s great. An open-world action-survival game is a new direction for the franchise, and it’ll be interesting to see what Square Enix has done with it. It arrives on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC March 5th.
SimCity
The god game returns, and it’s ready to eat your life. Everything we’ve seen about this game indicates that it’s fussily detailed, impossible to stay on top of, and chock full of sims who are happy to sit around complacently until they snap as a group and start wrecking stuff. In other words, Maxis is giving the fans exactly what they want. It’s PC-only, until EA decides otherwise, March 5th.
StarCraft II: The Heart Of The Swarm
Supposedly this will have more of an RPG tinge to it than the previous entry in the StarCraft series. Interestingly, this is now being called a “sequel” instead of an expansion. This swarms PCs March 12th.
BioShock Infinite
Please: Bad reviews or good, you’re probably buying this game. It hits PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 March 26th.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates To Infinity
This one we’ve singled out because it’s a weird one: A roguelike set in the Pokemon universe. For those unfamiliar, a roguelike is a game with random levels and permanent death. This is actually at the intersection of two franchises, since the Mystery Dungeon is twenty years old and has been using Pokemon for a while now.
And that’s just the five that will probably consume the most time: March is incredibly busy, gaming-wise. Let us know the games you’re looking forward to in the comments.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that SimCity is coming out on Mac too.
It is, I tend to use “PC” as an overall term because we somehow live in an era where most PC games come to Mac standard.
SimCity better be great!
Um…. no God of War? Why don’t other people love this game as much as I do?
okay I see that you said “take up the most time”… I replayed GoW3 about six months ago and it took me only two or three days… but I’m seriously excited you guys. Kratos is the hack and slash/puzzle master of my dreams. I preordered it months ago. Like…. August.
Oh, I’m looking forward to Ascension quite a bit, but I’m not sure about the replay value. I’ve played every GoW game they’ve put out, and loved ‘em all, but I played ‘em once.
GoW3 was the only one I’ve replayed (a year and a half after it came out), and I was disappointed at how fast it went. Aren’t they planning a multiplayer with this one? I’m looking forward to it even though I don’t DO multiplayer because 12 year old boys are THE WORST, plus I am pretty terrible at videogames (I only started playing seriously in my early twenties… I am currently in my mid-twenties) so I don’t want to be openly mocked…
There is indeed a multiplayer component, and it’s been getting good press. Personally I’m kind of “eh” on the whole concept.
I have and am currently playing the beta for the GoW multiplayer, and I can honestly say it is the tits. Getting brutal kills on people is so much more fun when you know that they have to watch it too as you rip out their intestines. I was expecting it to be pretty shoddy, but it is pretty much the same as the single player game.
Heart of the Swarm does not require you to have purchased Wings of Liberty to play it, which I guess is why it isn’t an expansion.
That would make sense, but it was always intended to be part and parcel with Wings of Liberty, so it’s still a bit… strange, you know?
ODST all over again?
I still can’t believe the acclaim Tomb Raider is getting. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to play it, it just makes me fear Bioshock won’t live up to the hype.
I will get over my intense hatred of QTEs for the sake of Tomb Raider.
Apparently they’re minor and more like slo-mo moments than QTEs.
Wicked excited for Bioshock, my only dilemma is ps3 or xbox. Also, Sim City’s always-on DRM is a big fat no-go at this station.
I completely understand, and agree in principle, with all of the anger at the always-on DRM decision. And yet…
*melts SimCity into spoon, ties off arm with surgical tubing*
What I want to do is pirate the fuck out if it and send a check to the poor Maxis guys that had nothing to do with said shitty decision.
Yeah, the DRM is awful. But the reality is, it doesn’t kill sales, so game companies will keep doing it until it does.
Is it Ubisoft? I’m not usually bothered by DRM as much as most people seem to be, but Ubisoft’s method is useless, clunky, and intrusive. After HOMM6, I vowed that I wouldn’t ever buy another one of their games.
And yet, I’m about 99% certain that I’m going to break that vow on March 5th.
Its the “Worst Company in America”, Electronic Arts.
Gah. Origin-exclusive? Still preferable to GFWL/Ubisoft, but not ideal.
That Metacrtic score didn’t include the pretty scathing review that Tomb Raider got from Machinima.
True, but then again, did you read that review?
I’ve been completely ignoring Tomb Raider till I saw footage on Conan’s latest Clueless Gamer. It actually looks pretty cool. Won’t be paying $60 for it, but I’ll get it for $30 or $40.
Can’t wait for Heart of the Swarm – our spring break starts the 11th, so I’ve got all week wipe open
*wide, gah
So pumped for Tomb Raider and Bioshock. Luckily the lulls in my school work are coming at perfect times. Also every time I see a new Starcraft anything I realize how fortunate I chose console over PC because I would have failed out of college long ago if I were able to play Starcraft whenever I wanted.
Heh, wait for it, if Diablo III is coming to consoles Starcraft is only a matter of time.
So glad I have Gamefly.
looking forward to gears of war judgement, just wish they had brought back horde mode. that was my favorite multiplayer mode in the 3rd one.
