This being a numbers-based post, let’s break down The 20/20 Experience‘s accomplishments by impressiveness:
1. The album moved 968,000 copies in its first week of release, good for the best opening week of 2013.
2. It’s been five years since an album from a male solo artist sold that many copies in week one.
3. That number’s also good for the third highest solo male debut ever, behind only Usher’s Confessions and Garth Brooks’s Double Live, which admit it, you owned.
4. Lastly, 20/20 set the iTunes record for the fastest-selling album worldwide.
What makes these sales figures extra notable is that unlike Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, which sold 1.1 million copies in its first week because of an Amazon $.99 promotion, The 20/20 Experience wasn’t discounted — it cost the normal $11 to purchase. This is one instance where you want to be compared to Garth Brooks.
