BrewDog’s Sink the Bismarck is an India Pale Ale that just went on sale in England, and before you go big whooping me, it is the strongest beer on the face of this planet. Just how strong is it? Bud light has an alcohol content of 5.0%. Miller Lite is 4.2% and Coors Light is 4.0%, which suddenly makes me feel like a teenage girl. But Sink the Bismarck measures in at a ridiculous 41% alcohol content. Just in case you failed high school math, that means that almost half of the beer is alcohol. But don’t worry about people getting too crazy over it. It costs $88 per bottle. Good luck with that, BrewDog.
Meanwhile, scientists at the VTT Research Center in Finland have taken to brewing their own beer, and they’re doing so by replicating the contents of five bottles of beer that were discovered by divers exploring the wreckage of a 19th century ship. While it’s certainly no remarkable feat like, you know, cloning a human or my childhood pet, the scientists say they hope to understand what ingredients were used in the 1800s and their AA sponsors just stood there and shook their heads.
While the Finnish get all scientific in making their own beer, President Barack Obama just rolled up his sleeves and did it the old-fashioned way – by having the White House chef use the White House bee hive to get White House honey and make White House Honey Ale. The Commander-in-Chief served this unique brew to the guests at his Super Bowl party on Sunday, and he even had a special label made. We were going to sample it but Joe Biden totally chugged the last two bottles.
- Russell Township, Ohio has taken a bold step into the 20th century after the city council voted to finally allow the sale of beer and alcohol for the first time since 1920, when the nation fell under Prohibition. The decision to finally allow a Circle K to begin selling booze came when council members realized that Prohibition was repealed 78 years ago. (Clevescene)
- Get ready to party, Georgia! The state has passed a bill granting counties and cities the power to vote to finally allow the sales of beer and alcohol in grocery stores on Sundays. Restaurants can already sell booze on Sundays and regular stores would like them to stop rubbing it in. (WSB Radio)
KNOW YOUR STATS
- In 2008 and 2009, Montana ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in per capita consumption of beer and alcohol, but California has led the U.S. in shipments with more than 20 million barrels each year since at least 2003. I would have researched it further but I suddenly got thirsty. (Beer Institute)
- BrewDog’s Sink the Bismarck and its 41% alcohol content leads Schorschbrau Schorschbock’s 40% for the world’s strongest beer, while Brewdog’s Tactical Nuclear Penguin and Schorschbrau’s other Schorschbock are tied for third at 32%. Meanwhile, Burnsybrau leads all beers in roofie content. (Beer Tutor)
