I’m not even sure how you’d pull it off, but word is that the FX Network — the most consistently good network on television — is in preliminary talks with the Coen Brothers to turn their black comedy, Fargo, into a television series. The film itself was fairly self-contained, but I suppose one could build a television series around Marge Gunderson’s character: Think a female, North Dakotan version of “Justified”s Raylan Givens.
In fact, it sounds kind of great, and I trust that FX wouldn’t sully the reputation of the Oscar-winning film. Truth is, it’s not the first time someone has attempted to turn Fargo into a television series. Back in 2003, Edie Falco filmed a Fargo pilot that was not picked up for series. Falco is kind of perfect for the role made famous by Frances McDormand, but she wouldn’t be available now (she’s committed to “Nurse Jackie”).
There’s no telling if the series will actually make it to air, but it would be fun to dreamcast the major characters (even if they weren’t ultimately included in the series). I think FX should stick with their regulars, and cast a “Fargo” series to look something like this:
Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) — Carla Gugino: This one is obvious. Gugino has played law enforcement on several occasions (including most recently “Justified”) and believe it or not, she’s actually a year older than Frances McDormand was when Fargo was released.

Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) — Donal Logue: Obviously, right? The world has been missing Logue since “Terriers” was cancelled, and he’s the perfect fit for the role made famous by Macy (although, part of me wishes that David Threlfall — who plays Frank Gallagher in the British version of “Shameless” — would get the role as a sort of poetic justice).

Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) — Kevin Rankin: Rankin has been one of my favorite character actors ever since his turn as a paraplegic on “Friday Night Lights,” and it’s not like “Justified” has any use for him anymore.

Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) — Ray McKinnon: Arguably the best part of the last season of “Sons of Anarchy,” as Linc Potter, McKinnon can bring the creepy and layer it with a dose of likability, which is ideal if this character were to survive the entire series.

Peter Stormare isn’t so high profile that he can’t redux his character! What else has he got to do? Unpimp ze auto? [www.youtube.com]
Heck, let’s revive that character instead.
Carla Gugino is your answer for everything.
As well it should be.
And she was in the Saved by the Bell pilot. Guaranteed success!
Fargo is my favorite movie of all time and while I trust that this series has potential nothing that they write will ever match up to this scene. (and it’s not the wood chipper scene)

Uh, SPOILER ALERT, didn’t most of these characters end up dead or in jail? Which leaves us with Margie, her husband, and … I dunno, Mike Yanagita?
Oh God, please don’t cast Ken Jeong as Mike Yanagita. Although at least that would get him off Community.
Felicity Huffman
But who plays Shep Proudfoot?!?
If they get Gugino to play the lead, then I’m going to expect some script changes that involve long, thoughtful conversations with her soaking in a bubble bath.
And Donal Logue? Amen. I love that guy so much I even considered possibly maybe watching the Ghost Rider movie when it was free on cable, until I remembered I had laundry to sort.
Gugino got a big ol’ head
That’s not the only thing that’s big on her.
I don’t know, I think Carla Gugino is too hot to play a Marge.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it, I just think it may need some significant reworking of the character.
For example, you could turn her husband Norman Gunderson (John Carroll Lynch) into Norma Gunderson played by Julie Benz. You know…because that twist would be progressive and protest against the gay marriage ban in North Dakota.
Ummm Dustin you must’ve not paid much attention to the movie b/c like 1% of it takes place in North Dakota, most of the movie takes place in the Twin Cities which is in Minnesota. If they do make “Fargo” into a tv show they need to make sure they get writers who are knowledgeable about Minnesotan culture.
The movie starts in North Dakota and ends in North Dakota. The only two scenes in that state. The opening scene is in Fargo.
Question: What if they had called the movie Bismarck?
Half of these casting options are committed to shows for next season (Carla Gugino in ‘Political Animals’ on USA and Kevin Rankin on Super Brain Girl on CBS) and Donal Logue has to finish the second guerilla season of Terriers that I’m funding from selling prescription pills.
Donal Logue is too awesome to be relegated to the Lundegaard role. That role needs someone more weasely and Vincent Kartheiser-esque.
