Last weekend at Comic Con, Maske reported firsthand that Sarah Wayne Callies — who plays Lori Grimes on The Walking Dead — was fully aware that the show’s fanbase hated her character. Then she attempted to defend the character of Lori in what Maske called a plea for compassion.
She’ll get no compassion from me. Whether her character is detestable because that’s the way she’s written or because that’s the way she’s portrayed by Callies, she’s insufferable. At the very least, however, Callies and the rest of us have finally found some common ground: We all want Lori to die.
In an interview with reporters at the The Walking Dead‘s 100th issue party in San Diego, Lori first talked about the unfair dismissal of the show’s initial showrunner, Frank Darabount, and then asserted that she knows Lori needs to die.

“[Former Walking Dead showrunner] Frank Darabont and I actually — before he was tragically and unfairly removed from the show — we used to argue about it,” Callies says. “I argued that it was necessary to kill Lori and I feel very strongly that for all of the other deviations we may have from the comic book, killing Lori does something to Rick that is vital for the story and can’t be done any other way.”
“I’ve said from the beginning, not only am I OK with Lori dying but I think she has to,” says Callies, who notes that it’s part of the nature of the beast with being on a show like The Walking Dead. “I’ve played this character with an eye toward an end.”
Apparently — COMIC SPOILERS HERE — Lori does die in the comics at the prison, when she and her newborn baby attempt to escape. I doubt that, if she dies, that that’s the way it will go down on the television show because that would mean that the newly pregnant Lori would be around for another seven or eight Walking Dead months, and the way the show is paced, that would mean 68 more seasons.
I will say that the quote certainly seems to hint that her demise may come sooner rather than later. What’s more surprising to me as someone who doesn’t read the comic series, is that 1) there are 100 issues and 2) that it is still ongoing. How many issues is the television series into the comics, and is there any danger of the television show catching up to Robert Kirkman? Or are the two entities so divergent now that it doesn’t even matter?

Funniest thing Dustin has ever written.
Agreed

The way Lori is written, I don’t know if ANYONE could make her sympathetic.
At least she agrees that Lori needs to die. I like this lady.
Way to let the cat out of the bag lol…
How many issues is the television series into the comics, and is there any danger of the television show catching up to Robert Kirkman? No chance. They are so beyond the Prison in the comics it would take years for them to even sniff whats going on in the WD comic.
Or are the two entities so divergent now that it doesn’t even matter? It matters. What Callies said is true and she really does need to die. I agree with you, they won’t mow her and her newborn baby down as she’s running out the back door of the prison, but for the story to at least stay in the ballpark of the comic, she needs to die.
Unfortunately w/ how slow they move things on the show, that won’t happen till the end of NEXT (not the one starting this October) Season.
How long until the show itself gets bitten and infects other AMC shows? Or maybe all the shows are already infected, so if one gets canceled…
I have just written the premise for a Golden Globes telecast comedy sketch. YW.
She was so much more likable in Prison Break.
Who is going to do all the fucking laundry though????
I took that line as an indication that she’s kind of lost her fucking mind and doesn’t know what to do now other than revert back to outdated matriarchal archetypes, but everyone else seems to think she’s just a cunt because of it. It skewed the rest of her actions into a Lady Macbeth type character for me who has just gone insane, which would account for her flip flopping on everything.
I think you’re giving the “writers” of WD TOO much credit bro
Man, Lori is so awful she eye-pokes herself.
The arrival at the prison happened in issue #11 (8 years ago!). So at this point there’s a long way to go to catch the comics.
I think I’ll just try to remember her as Dr. Sarah Tancredi and continue to ignore her existence on the Walking Dead.
Ah she looks like such a nice lady in that promo photo.
No Mike, don’t forget the hate.
*loads shotgun*

+10000 sir! You wins the intenetz today.
As another who doesn’t read the WD comics, I’m curious if we’re supposed to hate Lori or if that was an accident of poor writing for the character on TV. Was she hated in the comics?
Additionally, It’s funny how everyone who hates a character in ( insert whatever TV show or Movie) tends to hate on the actor as well. Not pointing any fingers I do the same thing. I just find it interesting that we all associate the actor and the character that much.
I’m about 20-odd issues behind on the comics, but Lori was kind of annoying in the comics too. Though at least in the comics she’d throw an “I’m sorry I’m so crazy, it’s the pregnancy/hormones” in there occasionally.
As someone who hasn’t read the comics, I really thought Lori would suffer a miscarriage. But, since they’re all infected anyway, the zombie-baby would eat it’s way out. Can anyone tell me why that WOULDN’T be the best possible way for her to die?
…I have issues.
I’ve read every issue of the series so far and I don’t believe the show ever can catch up to the book. So many things are radically different that yes, the same characters and some locations will be the same at some points but the show will undoubtedly veer off in a different direction then the book due to it not being financially possible based on the scope of the comic.
If I’m not mistaken, calculating the series progression and changes versus the comic-version, We’re somewhere around issue 13 out of 100+…
Oh my god im so glad im not the only person that hates Rick’s wife with an almost unsettling fury. She ruins the show. Every second she is onscreen, she is ruining the show. Every time she lets Carl run off and get swarmed by zombies for the 800th time in a row she is straining belief. Every time i see her weigh literally 60lbs while pregnant and bug her eyes out like she went to the Zooey Deschanel School of Acting, she is ruining the show. Please kill her. Please kill her. Please kill her. Kill her, turn her into a zombie, and then kill her again.
she purty!
