Justified showrunner Graham Yost appeared at the New York Television Festival last night and offered some snippets of information about the show’s upcoming season (including Patton Oswalt’s guest appearance), which is all fine and good and I will get to it in a minute, but not before we discuss something much more important first: Dickie Bennett’s hair. I have been fascinated by it for months, to the point where I once wrote a 1200-word post on Tumblr discussing its appearance and potential origins. So, needless to say, I was very excited that Yost provided some clarity about the whole situation during the interview.
“We don’t know what’s gonna happen with Dickie, nor do we know what’s gonna happen with Dickie’s hair,” Yost said. “In season 3, Jeremy [Davies] showed up and that was his haircut. He had cut it himself, and we said, ‘Okay, let’s go with that.’” [EW]
YES. To all of that. From Jeremy Davies taking it upon himself to mangle his head with an electric razor before showing up to his on-camera job, to Graham Yost being all “Hey, cool hair. ACTION!,” to Davies apparently having the green light to go bonkers with it again. The whole thing is perfect and I would take it out for a steak dinner if I could.
Okay, now that we got that out of the way, let’s get to the other important piece of business: Patton Oswalt’s role in the upcoming season:
He plays Constable Bob. “There’s this weird thing in Kentucky where each county has one or two constables, and it’s an elected position, but your salary is, like, $2,000 a year. You’ve got to pay for your own car, your own light bar, your own uniform. But what they get to do with that is serve papers,” Yost explained. “And they can charge $60 for serving papers, whereas the State Police has to charge $80. So they undercut the State Police, and that’s how they make money. So we just liked the idea of this sort of cop wannabe, who’s kind of a cop, interacting with Raylan some.”
Oh God, that sounds great. Like, really great. You know what? This news can come to the steak dinner with me and the stuff about Dickie Bennett’s hair, too. Steaks all around! Lemme call my man Dickie and set it up.

I miss this show so much.

That Dickie Gif > Dickie Bennett’s hair, and that’s a high bar
Always.

Never forget.

For reasons not important, I only recently finished season 3 of Justified, and followed it up with a half-assed viewing of last month’s Emmy awards. It’s hilarious to me that Jeremy Davies showed up with this exact look (hair both head and facial) in a sweet tux.
Also, I was scoffing at the fact that Dickie’s intended to be of an age with Raylen, only to discover that Davies is a mere year younger than Timothy Olyphant. WTF.
This write-up is to me as being fed grapes off a vine while 2 oiled up dudes battle was to Roman emperors – THIS PLEASES ME IN WAYS I DON’T COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND
So Oswalt is going to get shot right? Probably trying his best to do a Raylan impression? I feel like he’s going to die badly….this show needs to be back
Dear Graham
I like you. Do you like me? ____ Yes ____ No
Please write back.
Sincerely, Mech
That role really does sound perfect for Patton. Though he’s been great in everything I’ve seen him in.
I’m actually worried right now. Do we know anything about how Yost is to work for? Because I’d hate to see this show get Communitied. I mean, FX is no NBC, but is Yost a prima donna like Harmon?
Next season’s hair – one half cornrows, the other a boufant. Not split left/right, but front/back
I hope Constable Bob can get on an episode of Cops so the camera man can lap him during a foot pursuit. Just doughnut batter and cold coffee, with a gun belt slapped around it.
I’m still crying on the inside that Justified is only going 6 seasons total (according to Yost).
I think that’s the best part. The writers have an endgame, something great to work toward, and no stringing things out so the show will die a long a painful death.
The logical part of me appreciates when there’s an overall arc planned for a show. The childish part of me wants shows I like to start sucking before they end so I’m not as sad when they’re gone.
I am so goddamn happy that this show is coming back (relatively) soon, I think I might have myself some Apple Pie.
Excellent. Also, it seems like Miley Cyrus has been doing guerilla auditions for the role of the lost bennett sister lately (based on her hair and loathsomeness).
