I haven’t really been keeping up with the life of Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan since, oh I dunno, 1997? I saw the Pumpkins in concert back in the day, and as much as I liked their studio albums, it was one of the most obnoxious, grating, incoherent and screeching live performances I’ve ever witnessed. But Corgan hasn’t gone away; he’s simply moved to Crazy Town. Josh apprised us last year of his more recent episodes of crazy — including his foray into indie wrestling, a spiritual website, and a Twitter war with Courtney Love — and he’s also apparently opened his own tea shop, a little slice of caffeinated bonkers in Chicago.
Now he’s also stumping for furniture in a local commercial that also features stars of his Resistance Pro Wrestling. The commercial is a lot like most commercials: It’s obnoxious, senseless, and grating, which is also a fairly apt description fo Billy Corgan these days. But kudos to the alt-Voldemort: He is shameless about giving up his dignity. He leaves it all out there, including most of his pride.

Moved to Crazy Town you say?
‘Come my lady come come my lady
You’re my butterfly, sugar, baby’
Thanks for reminding me how terrible music from the 1990′s was.
Ahhahaha, i was definitely coming down to the comments to post this
That was uh…something…something sad.
I’m just going to listen to Siamese Dream and pretend this never happened.
Siamese Dream is the one and only reason I would even approach calling myself a Pumpkins fan. The knocked it out of the park with ___________ (I have no idea whether to call it an album, a CD, a collection of songs????), and basically went to the showers after that.
You’ve just neglected to mention their biggest masterpiece, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness which came out right after Siamese Dream. That album is one of the most incredible, sprawling collections of music I have ever heard.
^^ farahd knows whats up
Also, Adore was filled with solid songs and pretty interesting as a followup to a major album like MCIS. And the new stuff is pretty damn good too.
^ Thanks for pointing that out Keith, i agree they still make good music. They don’t have as much impact or as many fans but in a world where safe pop music is the most sold i actually find that to be an indication of their creativity and uniqueness. Not saying you gotta like Pumpkin’s music but anyone that listened to their back catalog knows that each album is something new and different, even if its not your thing. I’d much rather listen to a band that went in different directions and brought something interesting to the table instead of making the same album over and over.
The world is a vampire, but this furniture doesn’t suck! We’ll shakedown all our prices to only $19.79 per chair. Today is the greatest day to buy a new couch. And we’ll make sure to disarm you with a smile.
Freak out and give in to our low, low prices!
Our prices only come down at night, though!
Billy Corgan has fully transitioned from melancholia to infinite sadness.
There is ZERO chance I’ll forget this commercial TONIGHT, TONIGHT. I think TODAY is actually something, something Bullet with Butterfly Wings.
A+, would LOL again.
@L_L: I agree, today is the greatest day there ever was….
haha you guys killin it with the song title puns. but for real someone explain to me how a tv ad that helps family, local business, and defenseless animals all while not making a dime takes credibility from billy corgan? i don’t think thats possible unless it erases his over 500 song catalog. u don’t have to like his music at all to recognize dedication to art. i would say to whoever wrote this article that you should not imo be allowed to speak on a musician’s artistic credibility until you write a few hundred songs. i know i sure couldn’t do that which is why i try to encourage unique artists even if i dont like their work instead of tearing them down.
I assumed in Billy Corrigan’s Wrestling League there would be actual smashing of pumpkins.
Someday…
You know, cocaine isn’t cheap…just saying.
Rocket is a really fun song to jam to. I guess it would have to be my fav.
Gosh I miss Chicago.
I was a huge fan of Siamese Dream when I was in high school. I probably listened to that thing about five hundred times.
not sure why people think this is sad? maybe because you don’t respect pro wrestling? i think that’s pretty sad.
agreed. i think this is actually pretty cool, and the talent in Resistance Pro is surprisingly good.
I respected the fuck out of Pro Wrestling when I was 11. Shortly after I found an interest in girls.
What is sad is not his love for WWE, but his broke ass, which is why he shot a low budget local TV ad. Lesson for rock stars – save your cash
as a life long pumpkins fan, who has stuck through the hardest of times, i’m glad to see a comment thread of good natured ribbing. billy corgan is so easy to hate. its good to know not everyone on the interwebs are assholes
Despite all his rage he’s still doing furniture commercials. Nice ring to it huh?
“WALTER E. SMITHE, YOU DREAM IT, WE BUILD IT”
Their radio jingle I remember as a kid.
He looks the stay puft marshmallow man as an infant.
1979 was my jam when I was in middle school. Loved me some Smashing Pumpkins
@Tommy Dickles – YES! one of the best alternative records EVER
A friend of mine maintains that Smashing Pumpkins were just a disguised glam rock band lucky to be wearing the right clothes when the landscape changed.
The definitely were, but I think that’s why they’ve aged better than most “grunge” bands of their era. Glam Rock is awesome.
I think the person that wrote this article either didn’t bother to research this commercial or has a personal vendetta against Corgan. By doing this ad he secured $50,000 for PAWS, an organization that gives care to sick and abandoned animals, instead of taking the check himself. He also involves his own brother in his wrestling company. In my opinion I think the ad is pretty funny and I’m glad not everyone on earth feels the need to take themselves uber serious. You don’t have to like wrestling (i don’t) and you don’t have to like Pumpkin’s music (i do) but if you’re gonna spread hate and call someone loony you should at least seek out some context for the story you write.
My Billy Corgan impression always ends up sounding like my Cartman impression.
for the sake of not wanting to regret my wrist tattoo that says ” when your life is so, so dreary dream.” i am not watching this commercial lest i have the wear with all to cut my arm off lol
