Sort of lost in the controversy stemming from idiots on the internet being outraged that an Indian-American won Sunday night’s Miss America pageant was the fact that this year’s Miss South Carolina touted trailer park living in her state in her intro to the television audience watching at home.
“From the state where 20% of our homes are mobile, because that’s how we roll,” Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller proudly boasted in the intro. Naturally, many South Carolinians are upset about Mosteller using the platform of the pageant to help perpetuate the state’s ass-backwards reputation.
A lot of viewers in her home state didn’t think it was funny. Some postings on Facebook were, “Distasteful”, and “I can’t believe she said it.” On Twitter, one person asked, “Could we have any worse of an introduction?” Another tweeted, “If we can’t represent ourselves better than Miss SC did tonight, then don’t be surprised that 49 states laugh at us.”

The Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina didn’t think it was funny, but isn’t upset about the introduction either. Executive director Mark Dillard says, “I think our reputation is about 30 years behind the product itself. And actually, cases like this are an opportunity for us to get out the word and talk about that.”
Miss South Carolina’s number was off a little. 20 percent of the homes in the state are not mobile; the number is actually 17.9 percent, but that is the largest percentage in the nation.
With that said, Stephen Colbert is one “proud son of South Carolina” who thinks that Miss South Carolina “represented our state admirably.”
“That’s right — 20% of our homes are mobile,” Colbert noted, “which means they could leave South Carolina and yet they choose to stay.”
